Virtual Server 2005 + A configuration with this name already exists

I know this has nothing to do with retro computing, but this saved my life today!

I moved about 30 virtual images from one disk to another then changed the drive letters around. When i started Virtual server back up again, a few images were missing! PANIC!!!!!

So I tried to add the server manually, and I got the following message.

The virtual machine could not be added. The virtual machine configuration could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists.

To get around this issue, I did the following…

  1. Login to the host server. (RDP or what ever access you want to use…)
  2. Open the “c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines” folder in Windows Explorer
  3. Delete the shortcut to the virtual server thats missing
  4. In the Virtual Server admin webpage, press Add under Virtual Machines on the left hand side of the screen
  5. Enter the path to the virtual server configuration files, then click ok.

Thats it, you should now see the virtual server listed. Hope this helps someone else!
