Update February 2020 – The motherboard in the VIC-20 died a couple of years ago, so I no longer have this ‘hybrid’ PC. I will rebuild a new one with a Raspberry Pi during 2020.
I have finished building my VIC-20 ITX PC! Part 2 of the project has now been completed, so the original VIC-20 keyboard works. I have installed a device called Keyrah. You can buy one of these devices from Vesalia Online.
Specifications
- CV860A Motherboard with onboard Via Eden C3 CPU at 800Mhz
- 512 Mb RAM
- 40Gb 2.5″ IDE HDD
- Windows XP Home
I have the following emulators installed.
- VICE – Commodore VIC-20, 64, 128 and Plus 4
- WinAPE – Amstrad CPC and CPC Plus
- MAME
- MESS
- Fusion – Sega Megadrive
and many more…
Raspberry PI
Once the Raspberry Pi is on general sale, I will be replacing the PC motherboard with the Raspberry PI. Will be great to have a low powered PC with a ‘proper’ keyboard.
Updates
Looks like Commodore copied my idea. They have now released the Commodore 64 PC, VIC-PRO and the VIC-Slim. However, my conversion cost a lot less than the price of buying one of those! (Links dead – checked 17 September 2018)
The only thing missing in this photo is an IBM Model M keyboard 😉
Is that a challange – shall I try and find a model M keyboard….
The keyboard and mouse in the photo have now gone. Got black ones now!
Quick update on this – ordered my ATMEGA8 chip today to make the keyboard/USB interface. My bother will program it for me over the xmas holidays.
because i am amazing 🙂
Must say that this looks like an amazing setup for an old VIC 20- that model was my first PC that I ever had at home. Lots of memories come back to my mind about it. Kudos to you, sir!
Cheers!
Will I be able to buy this?
No – sorry!
