For many years, I have been wanting one of these devices – the Covox Speech Thing (Wikipedia). This is a device that connects to a PCs parallel port and gives the PC a 8bit voice.
Unfortunately, I have never found one for sale for a decent price, so I though about making my own. Following the schematic on the Wikipedia page, I put this circuit together – I know its not the best layout but I am planning to make a smaller one contained in in D-Sub hood.
So far, I have only tried a MOD player. Here is a random MOD file I picked up off the internet. Not bad for a port mainly designed for printers! I will upload some more audio soon.
